About the Show
Melbourne folk ensembles SARAY Iluminado and The Klez Dispensers Down Under invite you to a delicious soireé of musical delights. This shared concert, debuting at MEMO Music Hall, is more than a musical exchange - it is an intercultural dialogue between Balkan and Jewish music, two related yet distinctive musical traditions.
Klezmer music stems from the Yiddish-speaking world, and secular Sephardic Romances (Sevdah) originate from the Ladino-speaking world. Both genres narrate the everyday lives of common people and sound-paint pictures of past eras, exploring timeless themes of exile, love, desire, despair, triumph and hope. One of the greatest intersecting qualities of Jewish and Balkan lore is that most human experiences are closely woven with music, hearty food and drink.
